Avengers Assemble (2012)

Directed by Joss Whedon

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Samuel L Jackson, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Tom Hiddlestone.

The world is in danger, it’s time to activate the Avengers initiative and bring this band of superheroes together. With Nick Fury in charge he brings in Ironman, Captain America, Thor, Bruce Banner/Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye to battle the villainous Loki who is threatening to bring a race of aliens to earth to start a war.

Gone are the origin stories that we have seen in previous Marvel films, this is a full out superhero slug fest that not only involves the good guys fighting the bad guys but also good verses good – Thor’s emergence back on earth starts with a forest fight between himself, Ironman and Captain America.

The film just oozes with cool set pieces, witty one liners, from everyone, not just Robert Downey Jr. (although he is on top form as the genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist Tony Stark) and the film gives an equal amount of screen time to everyone allowing them to each have a scene stealing moment – Hulk and Thor after taking down one of the massive snake like robots is nothing but hysterical.

Everyone was fantastic in the film from all the main players to the characters on the outside like Agent Coulson and Maria Hill who are also given their own decent amount of screen time.

A stand out performance goes to Mark Ruffalo and his version of Bruce Banner and Hulk – Big, strong, clever, funny, and angry and every time he was on screen he was awesome.

I saw this in IMAX 3D and it didn’t take anything away from the film even though the film wasn’t shot using special cameras and it was added on in post-production. The 3D wasn’t in your face horrible and for the action pieces it gave you just enough extra dimensional action to look good. I will be going to see this for a second time for a number of reasons; to see it in normal 2D and to see if I can spot any extra easter eggs hidden within the film (see my previous blog on links to the avengers)

There are a lot of big films being released this year and this has not let me down. It has everything that you could have wanted from an Avengers film. I urge you to go to the cinema and see this film. Do not wait for it to be released on disc format or you will just be disappointed that you didn’t see it on the big screen.

Film Fact

As with all Marvel films you will want to stay on through the credits. There is a post credits scene about half way through them.
