Killer Joe (2012)

Directed by William Friedkin

Starring Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch and Juno Temple

After working up a big debt, a young man needs some money and he needs it fast. So with the help of his father, step mum and sister he hires a hit man, Killer Joe, to kill his mum so that they can claim the life insurance.

I wasn’t really sure what I was getting myself into when I went to see this and I was greatly surprised at what I saw. Usually if a film has McConaughey as the star you would normal tread with caution, I know I would. However as the titular character he plays a completely different character than usual, and he plays it excellently, a straight laced cop who on the side kills people for extra money, a far reach from his normal rom-com annoying love sick guy. The rest of the cast are also wonderful in their respected roles each having their own identity.

Recommend

While watching the film it gave me thoughts of when I saw Drive, great soundtrack and some pretty gruesome scenes. So if you are not into lots of blood then I would stay away. The film also has some quite shocking scenes and a lot of nudity, and is very bush heavy. All of this took me by surprise, much like opening the door to a near naked woman. Some people might find some of the scenes hard to watch. I on the other hand loved it. The thought of having to listen to Texan accents and watching McConaughey would usually put me off but it is easily one of the best films I have seen this year. Guys would like this. Girls might find it gratuitous and hard to watch in places.

Film Fact

Juno Temple can next be seen in what could possibly be a contender to the biggest film of the year, The Dark Knight Rises.
