The film business seems to be churning out remake after remake these days and most of the time there is no need for it. I have seen Total Recall and The Thing remakes/rehashed attempts recently and did not really enjoy them (see previous reviews – Total Recall and The Thing)
Don’t get me wrong there are a few out there that have made improvements or that I have enjoyed, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) being one but that could have just been down to Jessica Biel and a wet t-shirt.
But this latest remake, Carrie, is it needed? You could say that Carrie is a classic but I wouldn’t say it is exactly a great film. The film isn’t particularly scary, a hand coming out of a grave was the only bit that made me jump when I was younger, and the story told on film was slightly boring. I haven’t read it but the book by Stephen King of the same name was probably scarier, more atmospheric and what gave the film a higher profile.
This remake sees the title character Carrie played by Chloe Grace Moretz this time around, who appears to be hot property at the moment and starring in more films that seems humanly possible.
Will it be worth it, only time will tell but what we can expect is lots of blood and a burnt down school hall.
Here is the first trailer. Make your own mind up.
What do you think about remakes and what are your favourites and worst?
I’m not against remakes if they bring something new to the table, but when it is just a cash in on a film title that already has some following the results are usually dire.
I’ve never seen carrie and don’t have much interest in seeing it or the remake.
My favourite remake was the Departed, which didn’t even use the title of the original ‘Infernal Affairs’. Dawn of the Dead (2005) is also a winner. The Thing (1982), one of my favourite films, is a remake of Howard Hawks 1951 ‘The thing from another world’.
Talking of horror remakes – invariably they are utter tripe (looking at the horrible horrible excuse for a nightmare on elm street remake).
Like you, Carrie didn’t do much for me (incidentally massive spoiler in your piece above re the hand!). But technically speaking this is not necessarily a remake, but a fresh interpretation of the source material (which i assume is half decent) – so there’s always the possibility it might ACTUALLY be worthy of a viewing.
Horror remakes/reimagining yes are usually very bad. Spoiler i suppose but its a film that came out in 1976. If you havent seen it by now i doubt you will.
However have you seen the remake/reimagining Evil Dead trailer. Looks pretty gruesome
