A former UN employee, played by Brad Pitt, is called back into action to help investigate and stop the zombie outbreak that is destroying he whole world.

Having not read the book I went into this film only knowing what I had seen in the trailers and little bits of information from people who have read it. I understand that the film is a take on the book and not a direct likeness. When I first saw the trailer, I was very unsure over the CGI zombies that were piling on top of each other however when watching the film it didn’t bother me. The CGI wasn’t heavily involved and when you got close up they were the normal zombies you would expect.

The film had parts that felt like a resident evil game, sneaking past a zombie and getting in and out of somewhere ASAP but without the real tension or care for the characters. The characters just didn’t have that connection with the audience that made you root for them.

Recommend

Considering I thought I was going to dislike this film I actually enjoyed it and wasn’t a waste of my money. The film isn’t your typical zombie film and is less the gore fest that you would normally get. It is more of an understanding and beating the outbreak of the zombie virus and less of the kill to survive attitude.

I found the film enjoyable and so would recommend this as one to watch. I couldn’t possibly say how fans of the book would respond so would like to know what you thought.

TheFriedGold rating – 6.5/10 – Would have liked more gore

Film Fact

The film was supposed to be released in December 2012 but was pushed back to June 2013 to allow for the Christmas release of Jack Reacher

Having landed on earth and adopted by his earth parents, Clark/Kal-El must embrace his Kryptonion heritage to do battle against the war criminal Zod and his henchmen to become Earths saviour.

The film is an origins story which flashes back and forward between Clark’s/Kal-El’s life and how he has had to grow up on earth knowing that he is different to everyone else. The film does come across darker than any other superman film we have seen in the past, this could be to do with Nolan having a hand in it, but doesn’t take anything away from his history.

The fight scenes in the film are very fast paced but look excellent and not too CGI-ie. There are a few things that have been changed in the film to freshen things up a bit, like no red pants on the outside of the suit (very minor)and how Jonathan Kent dies (how Clark lives his life going forward), but they don’t detract from the feeling that this is a very good origins story.

My only niggle I have with the film is the flying scenes which didn’t look great and looked very green screeny. I’m glad I didn’t see this is 3D either as I think it might have produce some motion sickness.

As for character portrayals Henry Cavill, who is born on the exact same day as me (I could have been Superman), looks the part as Superman and fit in to the role perfectly. Michael Shannon was very good as Zod although Terrance Stamp will always be Zod to me and Russell Crowe (I’ve never been his biggest fan) as Jor-El was brilliant and came across as the father that everyone would wish to have.

Obviously this film is hoping to be the beginning in a Justice League franchise so it will be interesting to see if those plans go ahead and how they will do them. They did throw a couple of easter eggs in for fans with something written on a satellite in space but a more obvious one was the LexCorp logos which showed up. Could this be a glimpse of what a possible sequel would entail?

Recommend

The film is ultimately an origins film and is all about how Clark wants to grow up and what kind of man he wants to be. They play with that during the film and by the end he definitely decides his future and what matters most to him. Superhero films are all the rage at the moment with the expert job that Marvel are doing and the hopes are that this will help start the DC revival. The film was very enjoyable and I recommend this as a big summer blockbuster film that fans of old and new will enjoy.

TheFriedGold rating – 8.5/10 – Hope has returned to the Superman franchise

Film Fact

Russell Crowe (Jor-El) and Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), who play both of Superman’s fathers, have shared the role of Robin Hood. Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Crowe in Robin Hood.

By the beard of Zeus, its an Anchorman 2 trailer

Anchorman is one of those films that I can watch over and over and going by this trailer I hope the sequel will be the same.

There is also a new poster to accompany the trailer.

Anchorman: The Legend Continues is due for release in the UK on 20th December 2013

When a gang of criminals, who are being helped by Letty, strike Hobbs must locate the only man who can help, Dominic Toretto, and get him to bring his team back together.

The film has a slightly different feel to it when compared to the others as they are not stealing anything; they are helping out a Special Forces team capture the bad guys. The film is mainly set in London and while it was cool to see fast cars charging around the streets of London for an organised street race it’s not very believable.

A couple of other things that niggled away at me were how poor the Police were made to look in the Underground station fight, the amount of people that must of died when the tank was running over what seemed to be every car on the road, yet no one said anything, and most of all the plane that must have been on the longest runway in the world.

Recommend

Now I know it is just a film that is made for entertainment purposes and I shouldn’t look at the contents in such a serious manner and should just look at it as a popcorn/turn off your brain flick. So by going by that thinking the film was enjoyable and being the sixth instalment you know what you are going to get. Also the teaser just at the end of the film for number 7 will probably drag most people back to this franchise.

If you enjoy cars, tanks, fighting, gun battles, over the top action sequences and the other Furious films then I would recommend this to you although you could wait for it to be released on the small screen.

TheFriedGold rating – 5/10 – An enjoyable ‘turn your brain off’ film

Film Fact

David Tennant and Jason Statham were both up for the role of bad guy Shaw in this film but lost out to Luke Evans

Kiss my face, Its an Alan Partridge film trailer

It had been rumoured for quite a long time and now we are almost at the release of the Alan Partridge film which is titled Alan Partridge Is In Alpha Papa.

The trailer looks like some good classic Partridge with some great quotable lines as you would expect as well as cameos from a lot of the Partridge characters of old.
