A former UN employee, played by Brad Pitt, is called back into action to help investigate and stop the zombie outbreak that is destroying he whole world.

Having not read the book I went into this film only knowing what I had seen in the trailers and little bits of information from people who have read it. I understand that the film is a take on the book and not a direct likeness. When I first saw the trailer, I was very unsure over the CGI zombies that were piling on top of each other however when watching the film it didn’t bother me. The CGI wasn’t heavily involved and when you got close up they were the normal zombies you would expect.

The film had parts that felt like a resident evil game, sneaking past a zombie and getting in and out of somewhere ASAP but without the real tension or care for the characters. The characters just didn’t have that connection with the audience that made you root for them.

Recommend

Considering I thought I was going to dislike this film I actually enjoyed it and wasn’t a waste of my money. The film isn’t your typical zombie film and is less the gore fest that you would normally get. It is more of an understanding and beating the outbreak of the zombie virus and less of the kill to survive attitude.

I found the film enjoyable and so would recommend this as one to watch. I couldn’t possibly say how fans of the book would respond so would like to know what you thought.

TheFriedGold rating – 6.5/10 – Would have liked more gore

Film Fact

World War Z trailer

We have finally got a trailer for a film that has been in production since 2007 with the delay due to script re-writes.

Based on the book World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, Brad Pitt comes up against a zombie apocalypse. With a heavy looking use of CG on the zombies and a strange sort of swarm attack the jury is still out on this one. However we will still have to wait until June 21st 2013 to find out.

In the meantime have a look at the trailer and see what you think.

Moneyball

Moneyball (2011)

Directed by Bennett Miller

Starring Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill and Philip Seymour Hoffman

An ex baseball player is now the general manager of the Oakland A’s and to be able to compete with the money of the big team he hires a computer whiz who helps train the players by using computer analysis.

Pitt and Hill were both up for Oscars for this film and after watching it I can see why. Now I usually avoid the big Oscar films but this one did take my fancy. The relationship between Pitt and Hill is one of the main aspects of the film as well as Pitt trying to make up for his past and not wanting to be a failure again. The film as a whole is very heavily related to baseball, a subject I’m not really aware of, and can get a bit complicated at times if you know nothing of the sport. Also the film was quite long and at times a bit boring (that’s Oscar films for you), although there were some funny moments as you would expect from Hill.

Recommend

I did enjoy the film but it’s probably not one I would watch again. I would say watch this but fans of baseball may find this film more interesting than most.

TheFriedGold rating – 2.5/5

Film Fact

First baseball movie to be nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award (Oscar) since Field of Dreams twenty-two years earlier.

Megamind (2010)

Megamind (2010)

Directed by Tom McGrath

Starring Will Farrell, Jonah Hill, Tina Fey and Brad Pitt

Another animated film where the main character is the bad guy. Megamind and Metroman both travelled to earth at the same time, both ended up at the same school and both wanted to be popular with the special powers they possess. However Metroman was just too good and nice so Megamind decided he had to be the villain of the piece. They became legendary rivals, battling each other over the years with Metroman always just winning, as the superhero always does. Until one day the fight doesn’t go to plan and Megamind is left all by himself. Bored of having no one to battle with it is up to Megamind to fix this.

The film has some very funny moments and quite iconic adaptations of other superhero films such as the home planets destruction and the parents sending their baby off to earth. With a massive A-list cast this film delivers in the alternate way, much like Despicable Me, because it has you viewing things from the villain’s side and rooting for them throughout the film. This is another film that people of all ages will enjoy watching and the animation looks fantastic.

Film Fact

Megamind lands in a prison, where he is raised to be a criminal. This alludes to ‘Superman: Red Son’, a graphic novel which demonstrates what could happen if the infant Superman had crash-landed and was raised in a location other than a Kansas farm (in the story it was the Soviet Union). Both also have similar denouements: the hero retires, goes into hiding and leaves his work in the hands of his former nemesis.
