This is the End

This is the End (2013)

Directed by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg

Starring Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride

This-Is-The-End-Poster

Jay B is visiting Seth Rogan in California and they decide to go to James Franco’s newly built house for a massive party. While popping out to a shop to get some cigarettes everything goes to shit and it appears that they may be witnessing the end of the world.

The film is as silly as the trailers made out but is great fun, silly and in parts quite gory. All the actors play exaggerated versions of themselves in the film and don’t mind sending themselves up for laughs. As well as the 6 main characters, Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jay Baruchel, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson and Danny McBride there are a host of other cameos in the film including a very weird Michael Cera and a take no crap Emma Watson.

There are some hilarious scenes involving conversations on cumming and rape which are so stupid you probably wouldn’t get away with them in any other film.

The film is originally based on a short comedy film called Jay and Seth verses the Apocalypse, starring Jay Baruchel and Seth Rogan, which was made straight after production of Knocked Up finished. The trailer got such a popular response that it was put into full feature film production.

Recommend

If you are a fan of this bunch of actors then you will definitely appreciate the dark humour and stupidity that is running throughout the film. It was great seeing it at the cinema but you won’t be missing out on anything watching it when it comes out to buy or rent.

TheFriedGold rating – 7/10 – This isn’t the end for any of these guys

Film Fact

Initially Michael Cera wasn’t really slapping Rihanna’s butt, but rather making the motion and stopping right before touching her. As a result, the scene wasn’t working on camera because it looked too fake. Eventually Cera asked Rihanna if he could really slap her butt, she said yes but on the condition that she be allowed to really smack him across the face each time. Cera agreed.

21 Jump Street

21 Jump Street (2012)

Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller

Starring Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill and Ice Cube

A couple of underachieving cops are sent undercover at a high school to find out about and stop a new drug craze that has already killed one student.

This is one of those films that use to be a TV show, that starred Johnny Depp, and has been converted into a film for the present day audience like The A-Team and Starsky and Hutch. The film shows how culture has changed over the generations and not only is there even more diversity in high school, thanks Glee, but also how the geeks are now cool within social groups and the jocks are finding it harder to be liked.

Channing Tatum is one of those actors that I have never really enjoyed watching and think he looks a little bit funny. However having him with Jonah Hill actually makes him bearable to watch and even like. The film has some pretty funny moments and keeps you entertained throughout especially with the car chases and explosions. The film itself isn’t supposed to be taken too seriously as at times they play on the fact that it used to be a TV show and that’s what makes the film good fun to watch. The scenes where it explains what the drugs do to you are brilliant and add this extra dimension to a straight forward film.

Recommend

Jonah Hill is one of those actors that add humour and fun to any film, see Moneyball. His partnership with Tatum comes off really natural and the action scenes and humour are there throughout the film.  The fact that the film takes the piss out of itself makes this very enjoyable and I would recommend this film to anyone who wants to sit down and watch a good comedy.

TheFriedGold rating – 7/10 – Time to revisit high school

Film Fact

In one scene the bad guys are actually watching the TV series 21 Jump Street on TV.

Your Highness

A comedy that mocks medieval times as much as it can by using dick and fart jokes. From the same director as Pineapple Express, David Gordon Green has made another stupid yet fun and weird film again. The reason the film is likeable is because it doesn’t take itself seriously at all and nor do the actors. You have an Oscar winner in the beautiful Natalie Portman and Mr, i seem to be in everything and everywhere right now, James Franco along with Danny McBride who all seem to be just having a lot of fun and messing around. (if you watch the gag reel you will see what i mean)

Story-wise there isn’t much to go on. Two royal brothers go on a quest to rescue a fair maiden so that James Franco’s character can marry her. But to do so they must defeat the evil wizard Leezar. You do have some laugh out loud moments but really it’s just some well-known actors acting as dumb as they can, having fun and not really caring.

The film is all about fun and possibly set up for a sequel. If you are a fan of boobs, swearing, sword fights, arse kicking, good looking women and very stupid humour then I would watch this. (If you’re not doing anything else)

Notible reference to Zooey Deschanel for her very stupid yet sexy performance.

Film Fact

Director David Gordon Green said there was never a script used on-set. Only the plot outline and written notes were used and the dialogue is heavily improvised.

Submarine

A quirky British indie comedy bought to you by Richard Ayoade from The IT Crowd. Based in a town in Wales a boy is challenged by helping keep his parents failing marriage from falling apart and work on his own relationship issues with people, mainly a girl.

The boy’s fascination comes from being popular with everyone and living his life like he is in a film. There are some wonderfully funny dream sequences where the boy dreams of how his life could be and how it should end up. He enters a relationship with a girl and is all set on losing his virginity with her, and has to juggle all this with while trying to fix his parents marriage at the same time.

The camera work in the film is fantastic and really captures the wonderful Welsh landscape. The musical score in the film is also brilliant. Not just the music that is written and performed by Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys, which adds to the indie feel, but also the striking music that plays over the very bright coloured new act titles. It really adds quirkiness to the film by making you feel suspense which wasn’t actually there.

This was Richard Ayoade’s directorial debut in a feature film and if this is anything to go by we are in for some great future films. He defiantly has the quirkiness of The IT Crowd and The Mighty Boosh still inside his head but also the vision to have the most amazing camera shots to perfectly frame the actors with all the surroundings.

Film Fact

Richard Ayoade is good friends with Alex Turner from the Arctic Monkeys and has directed 3 of their music videos.
