Resident Evil: Retribution

Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

Directed by Paul W.S Anderson

Starring Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory and Michelle Rodriguez

Milla Jovovich returns as Alice for her 5th Resident Evil film and nothing has changed. She is still fighting the Umbrella Corporation and the undead.

The story takes place in a virtual testing facility and the aim is to get out of there in the given time frame while battling all sorts of zombies, making it feel like it could be a game you are playing.

It seems that with each film in the series they try to incorporate a character from the game and in this one they introduce us to Leon S. Kennedy, Ada Wong and Barry Burton as well as having Jill Valentine back again. The character of Leon is very week and the guy playing him is a bit wet. Ada Wong is another character that is acted quite badly and not given much screen time. Barry Burton might not look as plump as he does in the games but other than that he is a good representation of the classic game character but definitely wasn’t given as much screen time as he should of had.

Recommend

The zombies look good and so do the executioners but the battle and fight scenes come across a little boring, much like all the other films. I have

enjoyed all the films but they are just something you can put on without thinking about anything else. If only they had started the films by following the actual games then they could of been more interesting. This was enjoyable in parts and great that we finally got to see Barry. Wait for it to come out for rental and you should give it a watch, if only for the classic game characters.

TheFriedGold rating – 2/5 – The appearance of Barry gives this film a 2 rating

Film Fact

We have now had Chris Redfield, Claire Redfield, Jill Valentine, Leon S. Kennedy, Wesker, Barry Burton, Ada Wong and Carlos Oliveira. Will we see anyone else in future films? Sheva? Rebecca? Josh? Sherry?

Battle Los Angeles

Battle Los Angeles (2011)

Directed by Jonathan Liebesman

Starring Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez

We have had a lot of aliens invading earth films and this is nothing new. It tells the story of aliens landing and attacking major cities all over the world and we see the side of the fight against the aliens in Los Angeles.

If you are a fan of shaky camera shots, throughout the whole film, then you will like this. To me the shaky cam effect was used far too much and on occasions became a distraction to what was going on. The whole story, directing and acting was very poor and doesn’t really keep you entertained. The only real redeeming factor of the film was that the CGI was ok.

Possible Spoiler

I think i was expecting a stronger story, a nicer shot film and better acting from Aaron Eckhart but at the same time it does exactly what it is meant to do: Humans fighting to save the planet from an alien invasion with a typical Hollywood ending.

I probably won’t be watching this again and if you can handle cheesy one liners and shaky cam effects then give this film a watch. But do be warned – there are a lot better alien invasion films.

Film Fact

Aaron Eckhart broke his arm while filming a stunt on the set of the film. He still didn’t miss any days of filming.
