The Worlds End (2013)

Five friends reunite in an attempt to complete a pub crawl that they failed in completing 20 years previously. However things don’t go exactly as planned and they end up having to try and save the whole of humanity.

 

The third film in the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy sees a science fiction take on the series with Pegg and Frost having to do battle with Aliens/Robots while trying to complete a pub crawl.

The film does follow similar traits of the two previous films, albeit with Pegg and Frost in reverse roles with Frost being the sensible and serious member of the duo, with some classic lines, stupid behaviour and laugh out loud moments which will have you wanting to go back to the film for repeat viewings. (I have now seen it twice) The film has links to some big Sci-fi films from Hollywood’s past much like Shaun and Fuzz do to zombie and buddy cop films. Having read Pegg’s autobiography the ending of the film was a great link to something he talks about in his past.

The film does also have more serious parts than that of the previous films mainly between Pegg and Frost but they don’t deter away from the fun of the film.

Recommend

This site, TheFriedGold, was named after my love for the Wright, Pegg, Frost combinations and I have been waiting for this film for a while and it did not disappoint. The easter eggs and references in the film will only make your love for this grow.  It will definitely be one that I can watch over and over like the others and if you loved Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz as much as I did then you will love this. Go and see this.

With a Red cornetto in Shaun of the Dead signifying Blood and a blue cornetto in Hot Fuzz signifying the Police look out for a green cornetto in relation to Science fiction.

The World’s End is coming…..

The final film in the Blood and Ice Cream trilogy or the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy is upon us and we finally get our first taster. Yes it’s only a poster but it’s something.

 

What do we know?

Well it’s going to be centered on a pub crawl with the final pub being The Worlds End. What happens on the way? Who knows but we can expect many laughs, some awesome death scenes and of course a mint choc chip cornetto.

  • Shaun of the Dead had a strawberry cornetto with the red signifying blood and gore
  • Hot Fuzz had an original cornetto with the blue representing the police.
  • We can expect a mint choc chip cornetto with the green colour possibly representing a Sci-fi element to the film. Does that mean we are going to get aliens? Only time will tell.

Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

Starring Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron

In a dark twist on the classic fairy tale a Huntsman is sent into the woods to capture Snow White so that the evil queen can reign supreme. However things do not go according to plan when the Huntsman instead becomes her protector and joins forces with several dwarves.

I liked the look of this film from the initial trailer. It looked dark, action packed and something a little bit different in the telling of a classic story. I am not Kristen Stewart’s greatest fan, and I am still glad to say I have never watched any of the Twilight film, but in this film she is helped on screen by other good actors in Hemsworth and Theron not to mention some of the awesome dwarves – McShane, Hoskins, Winstone, Frost, Jones, Marson. The film did at times have a feel of Lord of the Rings about it, an archer, little people, a long trek to reach an end goal, a troll, a magical forest while at the same time sticking to the classic Snow White story. The sets, costumes and scenery all looked fantastic and the battle scenes looked great on the big screen.

Recommendation

I wouldn’t say this film is the greatest I’ve ever seen but it is a nice different take on a classic story. Hemsworth does some axe throwing, much like Thor’s hammer, but what makes this film better are the famous dwarves. They have the best lines and add the comedic aspect to break up the seriousness of the film. If you liked the trailer then I would say go and see this film. If you were a bit unsure then you can wait for it to be released.

 

Film Fact

Viggo Mortensen was in talks to star as the Huntsman, but negotiations fell through and Mortensen dropped out. The Huntsman could be seen as a similar type of character as Mortensen’s Aragorn in LOTR.

Attack the Block (2011)

Directed by Joe Cornish

Starring John Boyega, Jodie Whittaker and Nick Frost

 

 

That’s an alien bruv, believe it.

Aliens have come to town; more precisely they have landed in an area of London that is protected by a local gang of youths. Only one thing is going to happen, inner city vs. outer space.

The film follows 5 gang members who mug a lady in the street only to be interrupted by something falling from the sky. It turns out to be an alien which the gang members chase down and kill. Feeling good about themselves and thinking that can make some money from this they show off around their block. The only problem is a lot more aliens then land and the fight is on.

The film mixes gang stereotyping with fantastic humour along with action and some jumps along the way. The edition of Nick Frost as a chilled out drug dealer is great as he adds that bit of humanity and humour as well as being a well-known actor from other British made films. The aliens are cleverly made for the film being totally black with some glow in the dark teeth. There is no need to see so much detail on the aliens making these better than most aliens you see on screen.

Directed by Joe Cornish, of the Adam and Joe show fame, Attack the Block is his directorial debut and if this is anything to go by it will be his first of many. He recently worked with Steven Spielberg and Edgar Wright, who also worked on Attack the Block, on the screenplay for The Adventures of Tintin so he already has friends in high places.

Humour, excitement and a couple of jumps makes this a great film to watch. If you’re a fan of these elements then i would recommend watching this film.

 

 

Film Fact

At one stage there were reports that the film would be released with subtitles for the American audience because otherwise they wouldn’t understand what was being said.
